Yes, “ bury yours gays ” — reducing queer characters to inevitable tragedy — is an unfortunate trope that exists in death. Shiro cared more about being a pilot and exploring space than maintaining his relationship. The creators talked about the deep relationship between Adam and Shiro, but none of that is actually visible in the series.
