The females, especially the young Astrid are compelling and penetratively imagined; the two males, on the other hand, are flat and unconvincing. Sign In. Her examinations of human existence are pitch perfect. Brilliantly fresh. Member Reviews Hilary K, Librarian. Dark round the eyes. Register for NetGalley. Ai says he's in love, but he doesn't act like it.
I love it. The sections written from inside the head of year old Astrid are particularly impressive.
MJ Nicholls. Colin is a mid-level worker at a megabig corporation called Dark Enterprises. A zombie apocalypse has broken out and our main characters have been surviving with the help of a few others. Car broke down. I think Colin is what happens when you are a mess of a human being who lets his intrusive thoughts win out. And due to an inadvertent deal with an elder demon of unspeakable power, he gets it all. We trace their singular trajectories, their personalities bleed unto each vignette like a soul to some artifact--authentic life stories, these.
Alan D. Call me pedestrian. Although this is clearly earlier, less refined writing from Smith, I really think she can do no wrong. Ali Smith is that fun, smart friend that operates in a cerebral arena that is slightly beyond what you can grasp.
Flitting about like a moth is young Astrid, a budding videographer and keen observer of the arbitrary and contrary unfolding around her. Him minus it. Eve is enjoying success as a writer of a series based on ordinary real people who died in World War 2, whom she renders in a fictional rewrite of the life they might had lived. The magnetism which this mysterious stranger holds over everybody is mildly irritating, and defies explanation until the very conclusion when her presence - though never outright explained - is highly suggestive as never having been coincidental in the first place.
I loved both main characters, and also the two side characters we meet. I was unnaturally psychic in my teens, I made a boy fall off his bike and I burned down a whole school. And yet it is in Amber, the spiritual imagoand her delayed presence [as if there is a photographic delay between her intrusion and its consequences] which forces the family to deal with their past once they return from the supposed bliss of Norfolk.
I loved how real and not perfect the characters were. Anita R, Librarian.
